Belgique - Wavre, le 6 novembre 2020 – C’est une étape importante dans la lutte contre le COVID19 qui vient d’être franchie en Belgique où se situe le siège international des activités vaccins du groupe GSK. Après avoir été formulé, filtré et testé par les équipes d’experts de GSK, le premier lot d’adjuvant est prêt. Cet adjuvant sera notamment utilisé pour le candidat-vaccin contre le COVID-19 développé grâce au partenariat entre GSK et l’entreprise Sanofi.
\nFace à une telle situation de pandémie, l'utilisation de la technologie des adjuvants est particulièrement importante. En effet, dans la composition d’un vaccin, un adjuvant est ajouté à l’antigène ou la protéine pour non seulement améliorer la réponse immunitaire de la personne vaccinée, mais également réduire la quantité nécessaire d’antigènes ou de protéines vaccinales requises par dose. Ceci pourrait donc permettre de produire plus de doses de vaccin pour protéger un plus grand nombre de personnes plus rapidement.
\nL’adjuvant, une fierté belge
\nC’est à Rixensart dans le Brabant wallon, au cœur du centre historique de Recherche et Développement de la division vaccins de GSK, que la technologie des adjuvants a été développée en 1993. Cette technologie innovante d’adjuvant pandémique de GSK est utilisée dans plusieurs vaccins déjà commercialisés.
\nGSK s’est engagé à produire un milliard de doses d’adjuvant d’ici à fin 2021, notamment sur le site de Wavre dans le Brabant wallon, l’un des sites de production du plus vaste réseau industriel de production de vaccins au monde. Ces doses seront entre autres utilisées pour le candidat-vaccin contre le COVID-19 développé en partenariat avec Sanofi, mais aussi au travers de plusieurs autres collaborations comme celles avec Clover et Medicago.

\nUn rôle mondial pour GSK Vaccines
\nPour répondre à la demande globale de vaccins, GSK et Sanofi ont déjà conclu des accords avec plusieurs instances nationales ou supranationales pour un total de plus de 732 millions de doses de vaccin : jusqu’à 300 millions de doses avec l’Union Européenne, 100 millions de doses avec le gouvernement américain, 60 millions de doses avec le gouvernement anglais et 72 millions de doses avec le gouvernement canadien. Récemment, Sanofi et GSK ont également annoncé qu’ils mettraient 200 millions de doses de leur vaccin à disposition du programme international Covax, lancé par l’OMS et dont l’objectif est d’aider à assurer un accès équitable aux futurs vaccins contre le Covid-19.
\nAlors qu’elle ne s’attend pas à générer un profit, GSK s’engage cependant à investir tout profit à court terme dans la recherche sur le coronavirus et dans la préparation face à une éventuelle pandémie de longue durée. Et ceci, tant par le biais d'investissements internes à GSK qu’au travers de collaborations avec des partenaires externes.
