\nDe eerste voorloper van GSK, Plough Court Pharmacy, dateert uit 1715. De voorlopers van GSK in België deden in de jaren 1930 tal van ontdekkingen en brachten geneesmiddelen op de markt die nog steeds als belangrijke mijlpalen in de geschiedenis van de volksgezondheid worden beschouwd. Ons vaccinerfgoed is terug te voeren op Piet De Somer (die de eerste rector van de KUL werd) en Christian de Duve (toekomstige Nobelprijswinnaar), beiden Belgische onderzoekers. Al in 1945 deden ze het eerste onderzoek naar penicilline en antivirale vaccins. Het bedrijf R.I.T. (Recherche et Industrie Thérapeutique), opgericht door Pieter De Somer en Christian de Duve in Genval, bracht een levensreddend medicijn op de markt: penicilline.
