Rixensart, 25 april 2023 – Op Wereldmalariadag kwamen GSK, minister van Buitenlandse Zaken Hadja Lahbib, UNICEF België en vertegenwoordigers van het Belgische farmaceutische ecosysteem samen om de centrale rol te vieren die de Belgische vestigingen van GSK spelen in de strijd tegen malaria. Het eerste vaccin ter wereld tegen de parasiet die deze tropische ziekte veroorzaakt, draagt een sterke Belgische stempel. Het werd in België ontwikkeld en geproduceerd. Dertien Belgische GSK-medewerkers van het AmbassadRIX-project vertelden over hun reis naar Ghana om de vaccinatieomstandigheden in de meest getroffen landen beter te begrijpen. Tot slot kondigden GSK en UNICEF België aan dat zij hun samenwerking in Ghana de komende twee jaar zullen versterken.
\nInfectieziekten hebben grote gevolgen voor veel lage-inkomenslanden en maken in sommige gevallen meer dan 70% van alle ziekten uit. Dit is deels te wijten aan het gebrek aan toegang tot gezondheidszorg, geneesmiddelen en vaccins. Bijna twee miljard mensen wereldwijd hebben geen toegang tot de geneesmiddelen en vaccins die hen zouden kunnen beschermen en behandelen. Als zij wel toegang zouden hebben, zouden ze een gezond leven zouden kunnen leiden en zou het sterftecijfer dalen.
\nGSK zet zich al lang in voor de verbetering van de wereldgezondheid en de verbetering van de toegang tot geneesmiddelen voor degenen die ze het meest nodig hebben, zoals blijkt uit haar koppositie in de Access to Medicine Index. GSK wil een positieve impact hebben op de gezondheid van 1,3 miljard mensen in lage-inkomenslanden tegen 2030. De activiteiten van GSK in België spelen een sleutelrol bij het bereiken van deze doelstellingen.
\nIn de afgelopen 5 jaar waren meer dan 1 miljard vaccins bestemd voor landen met lage inkomens. Dit is meer dan 60% van de Belgische vaccin-export van GSK. Met de ontwikkeling en productie van het RTS,S malariavaccin zet GSK haar inspanningen voort. Dit vaccin wordt sinds 2021 door de WHO aanbevolen voor grootschalig gebruik in gebieden met matige tot hoge malariatransmissie door de Plasmodium falciparum parasiet. In 2021 waren 619.000 sterfgevallen te wijten aan deze verwoestende ziekte*. Vandaag hebben meer dan 1,4 miljoen kinderen ten minste één dosis van het vaccin gekregen in Ghana, Kenia en Malawi als onderdeel van het Malaria Vaccine Implementation Programme (MVIP).
\nGSK heeft een interne afdeling die zich volledig toelegt op deze doelstelling om de gezondheid in lage-inkomenslanden positief te beïnvloeden. Dit is een niet-commerciële entiteit met een specifiek budget waar succes wordt beoordeeld op basis van de impact op de gezondheid, niet op basis van financieel rendement. De ambitie van het bedrijf komt ook tot uiting in de investeringen in België. In 2018 werden bijvoorbeeld nieuwe faciliteiten voor de productie van poliovaccins ingehuldigd.
\nDe impact van deze nieuwe wetenschappelijke doorbraken is echter minimaal als vaccinatie in deze landen uitblijft. Daarom gingen in februari dertien GSK-medewerkers uit verschillende functies in het kader van het AmbassadRIX-project tien dagen naar Ghana, een van de drie proeflanden voor malariavaccinatie, om een beter inzicht te krijgen in de vaccinatiepraktijk ter plaatse.
\nOm ervoor te zorgen dat de innovaties van GSK degenen bereiken die ze het meest nodig hebben, werkt GSK samen met partners zoals UNICEF, WHO, Gavi - the Vaccine Alliance en anderen. Sinds 2019 werkt GSK samen met de WHO en PATH aan het Malaria Vaccine Implementation Programme (MVIP) en werkt het nauwer samen met Gavi en UNICEF om ervoor te zorgen dat meer landen het vaccin met succes kunnen uitrollen.
\nVandaag kondigden GSK en UNICEF België tijdens het evenement een verdieping van hun samenwerking aan met een tweejarig structureel partnerschap om het onderwijs in Ghana te versterken. GSK en UNICEF België werken al 20 jaar samen. Momenteel werken 160 GSK-medewerkers naast hun reguliere werk als vrijwilliger voor UNICEF België, waarbij ze binnen de organisatie fondsen werven om het werk van UNICEF te ondersteunen. De komende twee jaar zullen deze fondsen helpen om de capaciteit van Ghana op het gebied van onderwijs voor jonge kinderen te ondersteunen.
